Replacer is a simple and easy to use system file replacer for Windows 2000, XP and Vista. It safely replaces protected or currently running system files. The program is a CMD prompt utility which opens a simple DOS window when running:

Just drag the original system file, then the replacement into the window and Replacer will do the rest. A backup is automatically created.

Resource Hacker is a free application which can be used to edit Windows files, such as .EXE, .DLL or .CPL. You can edit these files and change many aspects of Windows, such as icons, dialog boxes or menus.

Resource Hacker allows you to view, modify, rename, add, delete and extract resources in 32bit Windows systems.

Change The Windows XP Theme

Do You Really Hate The Toy Like Appearance Of Windows XP?

Do You Want To Personalize Your PC To Make It Look Different To Your Friends Or Colleagues?

This is very easy to do using something called msstyles. These aren’t like other theme changers (shell packs) which require large downloads and then installation (meaning you can’t be sure if what you are installing is a virus). Using msstyles is safer and uses no more system resources than the basic xp theme, as the default theme is in fact a msstyle.

1. Okay, to get started it is necessary to modify a little system file called uxtheme.dll which prohibits the use of non-Microsoft themes. Just download this file and run it, now you are free to use any theme you want!

2. Now you need to find a msstyle you wish to use. There are literally thousands of styles on the net, just find your favourite! I used the ‘Microsoft Zune’ msstyle. Download your chosen msstyle to your desktop.

3. Now navigate to C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes and move your msstyle from the desktop to that folder.

4. Right click anywhere on the desktop and select ‘properties’:

5. Click on the ‘appearance’ tab and select ‘windows and buttons’. Your msstyle will be here, select it and click apply.

Congratulations, You Now Have A New Theme On Windows XP!

Change The Default Windows XP Folder Icon!

This is the first and best tutorial on the net to change the default Windows XP Folder Icon!

Haven’t You Always Hated The Ugly Yellow Default Windows XP Folder Icon?

Well Now You Can Easily Change It, Without Any Applications Ruining Your PCs Performance!

Here We Go!:

1. First download Resource Hacker here, this is a small program used for editing .exe, dll and other Win32 resource files.

2. While it is downloading (it is pretty much an instantaneous, very small download, but oh well) we need to make a backup of one important system file called shell32.dll. It can be found in c:\windows\system32\shell32.dll. To see this file you may have to turn off ‘Hide protected operating system files’ and ‘Show hidden files and folders’ in the view tab of folder options (under tools in my computer). Just drag a copy of shell32.dll from system32 to your desktop.

3. Open resource hacker and select file - open. Open the copy of shell32.dll on your desktop.

4. Select 'Action' from the top menu and navigate to 'Replace Icon', click on it.

5. Select either 4 or 5 in the list to the right, these are the folder icons. We will replace both of these. 4 is an open folder, 5 is a closed folder.

6. Highlight either 4 or 5 and select 'open file with new icon'. Navigate to the new icon (it should be close to the same size as the old one) and press open. Now click replace.

7. Do the same for the other icon (either 4 or 5), and click replace, making sure you use different 'closed' and 'open' folder icons.

8. Select file - save. Resource Hacker will also automatically create a backup on your desktop, you can just delete this. (The file we are editing is already a backup).

9. Now download the tiny and simple program called replacer from here. This is a program which makes it easy to replace system files, which you need to do to replace the original shell32.dll file with your edited one.

10. Now open Replacer, a DOS window will come up, follow the instructions on screen. You will have to drag the original system file and then the replacement system file (your backup shell32.dll file on the desktop which was edited). Once completed restart.

11. Download (if you don’t already have it) the simple Microsoft utility 'TweakUI' from here.

12. Run TweakUI, click repair in the left hand column. Select ‘Rebuild Icons’ from the drop-down list and then click repair now.

Congratulations! You now have an all new Default Windows XP Folder Icon!

Your desktop icon arrangement will be lost, you will have to sort that out again. Try making a new folder to test out your new icon!

Changing Any Windows XP System Icon: The Second Way

To change the Windows XP system icons using this method, we will be editing a file called shell32.dll with a program called Resource Hacker.

Here We Go:

1. Download Resource Hacker here, this is a small program used for editing .exe, dll and other Win32 resource files.

3.Open resource hacker and select file - open. Open the copy of shell32.dll on your desktop.

4. There will be a number of expandable folders in the left colum. We need the bitmap and icon folders. (There is also an AVI movie folder you may want to edit).

5. Expand one of these folders. Inside will be many smaller numbered folders, open each of these and there will be a file called 1033. Click on this once and an image will be displayed in the right colum, this is the icon.

6. Right click on the 1033 file and select replace resource. Select open file with new bitmap and navigate to the icon you wish to replace it with. (The new file should be the same size as the old one or results may be strange) To find the size of the old file, right click on the picture and select copy, you can use paint or adobe photoshop or whatever to find the size).

7. Look through all of the icons in the Bitmap and Icon folders, and change the desired icons.

8. Select file - save. Resource Hacker will also automatically create a backup on your desktop, you can just delete this. (The file we are editing is already a backup).

11. Voila! Your new system icons will be showing!

12. You can repeat this process for almost any icon you want to change, its just a matter of finding the appropriate file to edit (google searches work best). Try the .cpl files in System32, these are the control panel files.

Changing your Windows XP system icons is almost too easy using a little program called MicroAngelo.

Here We Go:

1. First download a free copy of MicroAngelo here.

2. While it is downloading we need to make a backup of one important system file we will be editing called shell32.dll. It can be found in c:\windows\system32\shell32.dll. To see this file you may have to turn off ‘Hide protected operating system files’ and ‘Show hidden files and folders’ in the view tab of the folder options under tools in my computer. Just drag a copy of shell32.dll from system32 to your desktop.

3. Once Microangelo is downloaded and installed, open Librarian.Librarian is the icon-manager part of MicroAngelo that can open up exe’s and just about any file with embedded icons. Read more about it here if you get stuck.

4. Once Librarian is opened, open the first backup of that shell32.dll file, and Voilà!! Tons of icons, actually most of the icons in the entire system.

5. Here comes the fun part. simply right click on an icon that you want to change click on replace and navigate to your new icon.

6.Once you’ve changed all the icons that you want, Save the file. Now you have a new and improved shell32.dll file. Almost done!

7. Now download the tiny and simple program called replacer from here. This is a program which makes it easy to replace system files, which you need to do to replace the original shell32.dll file with your edited one.
